BioPassword

Other Options

  • Token-based security requires each member to carry a small card which generates random numbers. When the member logs in, they enter the random number with their password. In addition to the issue of cost associated with issuing and mailing the cards (would have exceeded $500,000 for FORUM’s over 60,000 home banking users), FORUM members reported that they would not like the burden of carrying a card around with them. Members also shared that they would rather this money be used for higher savings rates or lower loan rates.
  • Security questions are something that would have to be asked every time a member logs into home banking and FORUM members did not want a solution that added to login time. Additionally, they were concerned about forgetting the answers to the questions (who is my favorite aunt? Sally or Lulu?)
  • Picture selection security requires members to select “their image” from a group of randomly generated pictures each time they log in. For example, a member is shown 10 images during enrollment and is asked to pick out one that is associated with their account. As with the security questions, this solution requires added time during every login.

BioPassword is unique in that it is based on biometric measures involved with the typing rhythm when a member enters their username and password. After establishing their rhythm (which does take a few minutes) during the first login, members do not have to spend extra time with each subsequent login. As long as the rhythm matches, the member is allowed access to their account.

FORUM definitely had a bump in member service calls when this solution was rolled out but volumes have returned to normal and the solution is working very well for both members and FORUM employees (the enterprise version runs on all employee work stations).
